In this way, the purchasers get documentation for the origin of the gas they buy. Each unit of natural gas injected into the natural gas network replaces a similar unit of conventional natural gas.
The certificate scheme tracks the contractual flows of natural gas rather than the actual physical flows. As such, the certificate does not relate to the sale of the actual gas, but can be sold and bought independently. The bio natural gas producer can therefore choose to sell the certificates, ie transfer them to another certificate account holder or to an end user, or cancel the certificates.
The certificates make it possible to track each 1 MWh of bio natural gas from the time of injection into the distribution network, through all trades, until it is sold to the consumers.
Registration of certificate account holder and production facility
If you own a biogas facility that injects bio natural gas into the natural gas network, you can have certificates issued for the biogas. Other companies wanting to transfer gas certificates can also be registered in our certificate register.
Whether you own a biogas facilty or another company, you must set up a certificate account with Energinet.dk. You do this by filling in a registration form and submitting it appended to an email to
gascertifikat@energinet.dk
Advantages of the biogas certificate scheme
Each MWh of bio natural gas is earmarked electronically with a unique gas certificate identification number. Each certificate also includes information about where, when and how the bio natural gas was originally produced.
When consumers buy certificates, the certificates are their guarantee that the volume of certified gas has been produced in a sustainable manner and has not been sold to others. The scheme is a simple and reliable way of eliminate double-counting of the registered bio natural gas.
At the same time, the scheme inspires confidence in the bio natural gas sector and incentivises bio natural gas producers to upgrade the gas and inject is as bio natural gas instead of using it to produce electricity.
