Fossil fuels
Coal, natural gas and oil will continue to be used in the Danish energy system for a number of years.

Until we have sufficient renewable energy and technology to meet the total energy demand, we must ensure that fossil fuels are used with the lowest possible environmental impact.

Today renewable energy sources cover nearly 30% of the electricity and CHP production. Although this share will grow in the coming years, fossil fuels will still be used to a large extent in the Danish energy production.

Fossil fuels emit CO2 and a number of environmentally hazardous substances. That is why it is important to keep the pollution from the use of coal, oil and natural gas at an absolute minimum. The existing power plants must have im-proved environmental cleaning, better utilisation of resources and fuels, and they must be able to support adjustable and flexible operation until they are replaced by renewable energy sources. This is also a field that requires contin-ued research and development.
