Integrated planning of energy systems
Research into energy systems investigates the potential for integrating various technologies.

This may be the use of electricity for district heating production by means of electric boilers or heat pumps, or biofuel production for the transport sector with electricity and heat production. Equally important is the integration of energy storage and production from renewable energy sources.

Integrated planning of the Danish energy systems will be required in a future with growing amounts of renewable energy, of which the wind, the Sun and waves only generate energy according to the weather.

Denmark has already proved that coproduction of electricity and heat at CHP plants has given major energy savings and ensured high efficiency. The growing amount of fluctuating electricity production will now require that electricity and heat are not necessarily produced together. On the other hand, the transport sector's great demand for environmentally-friendly fuels will open new possibilities for efficient energy production.
