How should we develop the Danish power system to be able to handle 50 per cent wind power in the system and other renewable energy? How will the electricity market develop with twice as much wind power? And can Denmark expect that our neighbouring countries will continue to help in future in order to avoid oversupply?

This among many other challenging problems which the future power system raises, Energinet.dk has presented to the top of Danish expertise as well as foreign consultants in the EcoGrid.dk project.

Phase 1 of the project has now min completed and the conclusion reached by the Danish research project is clear: The challenges from the wind power demands a reassessment of the whole design of the Danish power system within the next 10-15 years. Furthermore the experts present a complex set of solutions for the complex set of challenges, which exists. The reader should not expect one simple solution to an unproblematic absorption of 50 per cent wind energy let alone two, but rather a wide range of coherent solutions.

The major challenge for the Danish TSO, Energinet.dk, is not only to identify and develop technical solutions, but also to create an economical optimum balance among the various solutions with regard to both security of supply and environmentally friendly solutions.

According to the EcoGrid experts it is a basis point to describe a coherent, national SmartGrids strategy. Parallel to that they recommend new tools to control the energy system in the transitional phase, and in future the development of all energy systems should take place as one overall solution.

EcoGrid.dk, phase 1, started with 17 Danish and foreign participants. The project is funded by Energinet.dk's ForskEL programme with an amount of DKK 4.4 mill. and has a total budget of DKK 5.8 mill.

Phase II, of the project should be considered as an umbrella coverering projects in progress and activities in Energinet.dk and other possible new ForskEL projects. All knowhow and solutions generated in phase I and II should lead to a Phase III which includes large-scale demonstration on Bornholm. Here the chosen solutions and means can be tested in practise - both individually, but not least in collaboration with each other.

We encourage you to read the report of the EcoGrid.dk, phase 1, and join us on our journey to a future scenario with 50 per cent wind power in the Danish electricity system.
